Degree Requirements and Graduation

For the Post-BSN to DNP degree, completion of 76 semester credit hours (see Plan of Study), an overall minimum GPA of 3.0, no more than one C in a required course, and no incomplete grades are required to be eligible for graduation.  Certain final grades of C will be considered failing and result in student dismissal from the program.  These courses are listed in the School of Nursing Catalog under Graduate Program Policies--Grading Policy for Fundamental APRN/Nurse Anesthesia Courses.

The program is designed to be completed in 32 months on the Three-Year Plan. A Four-Year plan of study is also available.  A clinical preceptorship is required.

Clinical/Practicum Hours

The Doctor of Nursing Practice requires that all students have 1,000 clinical/practicum hours post bachelors. The clinical ratio for enrolled students prior to Fall 2025 entry is 1:4, or 60 clinical hours per credit hour. Students entering the graduate program beginning in Fall 2025 will have a clinical ratio of 1:6, or 90 clinical hours per credit hour.

DNP Project

A hallmark of the practice doctorate is the DNP project that allows students to demonstrate in-depth knowledge in an area of specialty practice and synthesis of coursework and practice application. The project is guided and evaluated by a primary faculty and secondary faculty (optional). The project results in a scholarly paper and presentation.

The focus of all DNP projects is on knowledge translation at multiple system levels. During the program, students work with faculty to begin exploring concepts related to their area of interest while evaluating sources of evidence related to the problem/need. The project will be defined through the DNP Project Problem Identification and Evidence Synthesis course. Based upon an assessment and evaluation of the evidence, the plan and design will be developed for a DNP project initiative.

Curriculum

The BSN to DNP Family Practice Nurse/Nursing program has five Post-Bachelor’s specialties in Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Primary Care (PNP-PC), Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and Public Health Nurse Leader. The BSN to DNP program is designed to prepare nursing leaders for the highest level of professional nursing practice beyond the initial preparation in the discipline. The curriculum is based on the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice developed by the American Association Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2021).

Advanced Practice Leadership

Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

The DNP-Advanced Practice Leadership degree can be earned in 8 semesters on our Three-Year Plan of Study and in 11 semesters on our Four-Year Plan of Study.   An adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who provides care to children, seventeen-years-of age and over, and adults of all ages. They provide a spectrum of care, from disease prevention to acute care management. The primary role of the AGACNP is to care for patients with complex, acute conditions. Many AGACNPs practice in intensive care, trauma, or acute care units. While most AGACNPs report practicing in tertiary care practice settings, AGACNPs can now also work in specialty clinics and long-term care facilities. AGACNPs provide complex monitoring and develop multifaceted treatment plans for adults and gerontology patients. They focus on preventing future complications while improving the health of the patient.

The Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner1 76 credit hour plan of study is for nurses who hold Registered Nurse (RN) licensure with the Board of Nursing.
